Improvised Fishing: Lines, Hooks, and Traps

Objective
Catch fish with improvised lines, hooks, and passive traps while you conserve energy.
Scenario (Example)
Example: Lake outflow with small trout and minnows present. You have cordage, safety pins, and scraps for bait.
Handlines & Hooks
- Use paracord inner strands or bank line; add a small sinker (pebble tied in cloth if needed).
- Bend safety pins or carve bone/wooden gorges for hooks.
- Baits: worms under rocks, grubs in rotten logs, or bread/jerky scraps.
Traps
- Fish weir: V-shaped rock wall pointing downstream funnels fish.
- Bottle trap: Inlet cut and inverted; bait inside for minnows/crayfish.
Presentation
- Fish early/late; keep line stealthy; avoid heavy shadows over the water.
Real Example
A single handline with a carved gorge and worm bait took two small trout at the outflow, while a bottle trap collected minnows for backup food.
Checklist
- Bank line or paracord guts
- Hooks/pins, small weights
- Knife for carving, bottle for trap
Contingencies
- No bites → change depth/location every 10 minutes.
- Strong current → fish eddies behind rocks.
After-Action
Note which baits and structures produced; pre-pack a micro fishing kit in your survival pouch.
