Signaling from Remote Locations Without Electronics

Objective
Attract rescuers without powered devices using contrast, geometry, and sound that carry.
Scenario (Example)
Example: Electronics failed after a river dunk. You’re in a valley with occasional aircraft and a river bar nearby.
Visuals
- Create large straight lines: SOS or a long arrow with light/dark contrast.
- Use motion: wave a high-contrast cloth slowly and repeatedly.
- Three of anything signals distress: stones, fires, reflective panels.
Mirrors & Reflectors
- Use a mirror/foil; sight through a V with your fingers; sweep across aircraft path.
- Sun at low angles (morning/evening) gives the brightest flashes.
Sound
- Whistle: three short blasts; repeat.
- Drum on hollow logs/rocks in canyons for echo.
Real Example
A stranded paddler laid an arrow of driftwood on a gravel bar and used a foil packet as a mirror; a rescue helicopter picked them up after a single pass.
Checklist
- Hi-vis panel or space blanket
- Whistle
- Mirror/reflective foil
Contingencies
- No sun → emphasize geometry and sound; prepare night signals at dusk.
- Dense canopy → move to bars, meadows, or ridges.
After-Action
Add a dedicated mirror and tarp square to your kit if you lacked them.
