Surviving in Extreme Heat

Objective
Move and rest safely when temps are high, humidity is punishing, and water is limited.
Scenario (Example)
Example: 42°C desert hike, no wind, 8 km total with 300 m gain. You carry 3 L water and a sun hooch (tarp + trekking poles).
Hydration Math
- Plan 0.5–1.0 L/hour depending on pace and shade.
- Add electrolytes every 1–2 hours; avoid chugging plain water only.
Pacing Strategy
- Move 25 minutes, rest 10 in shade; repeat.
- Start pre-dawn; longest rest at solar noon.
- Cover skin; wet bandana at pulse points.
Shade Tactics
- Rig tarp low on windward side; reflective side out if available.
- Rest off the ground if surface is hot; use pad.
- Share shade tightly to reduce area.
Heat Illness Recognition
- Heat exhaustion: heavy sweat, dizziness, cramps → stop, shade, cool, electrolytes.
- Heat stroke: hot dry skin, confusion → emergency; cool aggressively, evacuate.
Common Errors
- Black clothing + no hat.
- Midday pushes “to get it done.”
- No plan for electrolytes.
Field Drill
Walk 60 minutes at easy pace in heat with 1 L of water. Measure intake and sweat rate (pre/post body weight) and adjust your plan.
