Before (Home Hardening)
- Bolt bookcases and water heater; strap appliances; latch cabinets.
- Store heavy items low; tether TV/monitors; clear exits.
- Know gas shutoff; keep adjustable wrench nearby.
During (Drop, Cover, Hold On)
- Drop to hands and knees—stay put.
- Cover under sturdy furniture or next to interior wall; protect head/neck.
- Hold until shaking stops.
After (First 30 Minutes)
- Check for injuries; stop bleeding first.
- Smell/hear gas? Turn off gas outside; evacuate. Don’t use switches or phones inside.
- Avoid elevators; expect aftershocks; move to open area; check neighbors.
